“The Three from the Volksstimme”

A closer look at some of the Jewish “Dunera Boys” from Vienna led to the surprising discovery that Heinz Altschul (whose political biography also shows points of contact with the Berlin-based Heinz Dehn), Georg Auer, and Arthur Rosenthal (Arthur West) joined the Communist Party of Austria while in exile. After the war ended and they returned home, they wanted to contribute to the anti-fascist development of Austria.

At different but overlapping times, the three “Australians” worked together as editors of the party newspaper *Volksstimme*. However, their political paths diverged after the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. They were highly respected among their fellow Austrian journalists. This shared chapter in their political lives served as the impetus for further research, for reaching out to their children, and for writing a story about “The Three from the Volksstimme.”
