Back to the UK? 13 Dunera boys believed what they were told a few days after their arrival at Camp Hay, Australia: they would be sent back to Britain. When they arrived in Sydney Harbor they were surprised because they were taken back on board the Dunera. As free unskilled workers, they were allowed to polish dishes, pots and pans to a shine. The second surprise was their “disposal” in the port of Bombay. Short biographies provide information about 13 fates.

… and again on the Dunera – this time from Sydney to Bombay.
The “Shanghai 12” was a group of intellectuals who carried out anti-fascist media and cultural work in Shanghai. Faced with the threat from Japan, the British evacuated them to Australia. Among them was the actress Eva Schwarcz, other theater people and journalists, a well-known psychologist – and neighbors of Heinz Dehn.
Another short biography could be added to the Kitchener Camp. Now we can find out more about 17 of Heinz Dehn’s comrades from this camp, and now also about Kurt Fischer, another Dunera Boy.
More new articles are planned for 24 June.

A popular place to escape was the “International Settlement” in Shanghai. No visa was required for entry.
