In 1940, the British government deported him on the HMT Dunera to Australia, where he remained until 1954 after the end of his internment and army service. As a Jew, he was excluded from membership in the \u201c<span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27633'>Reichsfilmkammer<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[44]  Wikipedia on the <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reichsfilmkammer\"><u>Reichsfilmkammer<\/u><\/a>, accessed on August 16, 2025.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d, which was synonymous to a professional ban. Lohde fought back against this with a letter to Goebbels that was as courageous as it was futile, according to a tradition passed down to Straschek, for which no evidence is available.<br><br>Lohde did appear in films that were ideologically close to National Socialism. It was established by Paul von Hindenburg in July 1934 and was therefore also known as the \u201cHindenburg Cross.\u201d Because Hindenburg, former field marshall of the Emperor and now Reich President and Hitler&#8217;s stooge, had already died on August 2, 1934, the medal was henceforth awarded \u201cin the name of the F\u00fchrer and Reich Chancellor.\u201d This was in contrast to the awarding of orders, exclusively at the request of war participants. At least 8 million of these medals were distributed.<br><br>In 1934\/35, persecution had not yet progressed to the point where Jews were excluded from receiving the medal. However, this hope proved to be illusory. Eight months later, this was no longer valid.<br><br>The short period between his arrival in Great Britain in summer 1939 and his arrest and internment on <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27741'>July 1, 1940<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[69]  Australian personnel file for S. Lohde, NAA_ItemNumber9903925, via NAA.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> was naturally too short to establish himself in the country of asylum and make a lasting entry into the film industry. The only thing that can be verified with certainty is the war comedy \u201c<span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27744'>Neutral Port<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[70]  \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/de\/title\/tt0032838\/?ref_=mv_close\"><u>Neutral Port<\/u><\/a>\u201d in the IMDB film database, accessed on 15 August 2025.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>&#8221; with Lohde as the German consul. Straschek noted other productions, but there is no evidence of Lohde&#8217;s involvement in the relevant film databases. However, it may be that he had individual days of filming in small roles, so that his <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27749'>name is not documented<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[71]  \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/collections-search.bfi.org.uk\/web\/Details\/ChoiceFilmWorks\/%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20150028013\"><u>Convoy<\/u><\/a>,\u201d \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/collections-search.bfi.org.uk\/web\/Details\/ChoiceFilmWorks\/%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20%20150052023\"><u>Sailors Three<\/u><\/a>,\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/collections-search.bfi.org.uk\/web\/Details\/ChoiceFilmWorks\/150034612\"><u>Night Train to Munich<\/u><\/a>\u201d in the British Film Institute database, accessed on August 15, 2025.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>. This applies to \u201cNighttrain to Munich\u201d (Officer on the train), \u201cConvoy,\u201d and \u201cSailors Three,\u201d among others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CWrong_ship%E2%80%9D_%E2%80%93_Wrong_enemy\"><\/span><b>\u201cWrong ship\u201d? \u2013 Wrong enemy!<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are differing opinions about the circumstances surrounding Sigurd Lohde&#8217;s deportation to Australia. After his return, he himself told the Berlin newspaper \u201eTelegraf\u201c that he had been sent \u201c<span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27763'>to Australia by mistake<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[72]  Headline in \u201cTelegraf,\u201d March 1, 1955, page 3, source: Lohde family archive<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d. He should have been interned on the Isle of Man, he continued. However, in the port of Liverpool, there was \u201ctremendous confusion\u201d in \u201cthe days before Dunkirk,\u201d and he was \u201cliterally forced onto the wrong ship\u201d \u2013 namely the <em>Dunera<\/em> \u2013 by British soldiers. The claim that Lohde arrived at the port by taxi, carrying a ticket and \u201can official document,\u201d in order to be transferred to the Isle of Man to work as an interpreter is hardly credible. Despite Sigurd&#8217;s protests, the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27769'>guards<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[73]  See\u00a0 Cyril Pearl aao.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> reacted \u201cby lowering their bayonets and barking \u2018Get going!\u2019\u201d in the direction of the <em>Dunera<\/em>. However, they have a very real background.<br><br>First of all: The departure of the <em>Dunera<\/em> has no temporal connection with \u201cthe days before Dunkirk.\u201d The evacuation of Allied troops across the English Channel was completed on <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27776'>June 5, 1940<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[75]  Wikipedia on the <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Schlacht_von_D%C3%BCnkirchen\"><u>Battle of Dunkirk<\/u><\/a>. The Dunera did not set sail until July 10, 1940.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>, a month before the <em>HMT Dunera<\/em> departed Liverpool on July 10, 1940. Moreover, Dunkirk is located at the eastern end of the Channel. An evacuation by sea of more than <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27780'>1,100 kilometers<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[76]  See <a href=\"https:\/\/sea-distances.org\/\"><u>Sea Distances<\/u><\/a> online, accessed on 25 August 2025.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> (597 nautical miles) from Dunkirk to Liverpool would have blocked valuable transport capacity for weeks and hampered the evacuation of Allied troops. Dunkirk and Dover are only 38 nautical miles apart, a tour of just a few hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9EEconomical_with_the_truth%E2%80%9C\"><\/span>\u201eEconomical with the truth\u201c<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The main reason for Sigurd&#8217;s \u201caccidental\u201d trip to Australia was his internment in the camp at the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27784'>Lingfield<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[77]  The small town is located in the county of Surrey, south of London.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> racecourse, which was only intended for short-term accommodation. Officers not only at this camp abused the trust placed in them by the internees and lied to \u201ctheir\u201d men in order to meet the requirements for <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27788'>\u201cvoluntary\u201d registration<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[78]  Around 1,000 internees from the British camp in Huyton were promised greater freedom and that their interned wives and children would follow shortly. Further migration, e.g. to the USA, was held out as a prospect. See <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/the-duneras-journeypart-3\/\">Memorandum der Internierten von Camp 7<\/a>.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> for overseas travel. In their <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/the-duneras-journeypart-3\/\">memorandum on the <em>Dunera<\/em> voyage<\/a>, the internees at Camp 7 Hay stated, among other things:<\/p>\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201cThe internees coming from the temporary camp Lingfield (about 350 on board H.M.T. \u201aDUNERA\u2018) were promised that they were going to a more permanent camp in England. Like Lingfield Race Course (photographed in 2011), many racecourses in Great Britain and Australia were used for military purposes and to house internees.<br>Source: Wikipedia, Sempre Volando.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Another consideration speaks against a \u201cmistake.\u201d A total of 13 lists of names were drawn up in several internment camps for transport on the <em>Dunera<\/em>. \u201cLohde, Sigismund 7992\u201d is one of <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27798'>300 names on list 7<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[80]  See list 7 of the 12 of 13 embarkation lists in the NAA archive, NAA_657104_Liste7_300, accessed on February 17, 2024.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>, which is assigned to the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27802'>Camp Lingfield<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[81]  The connection between List 7 and Lingfield is established by historians Alan Morgenroth and Rachel Pistol in \u201cThe Dunera Boys ... Who, when and why?\u201d In \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.duneraassociation.com\/duneranews\/\"><u>Dunera News<\/u><\/a>\u201d No. 109, page 10f.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>. The deportation of this group was therefore part of the British authorities&#8217; plan to send internees overseas, and not a \u201cmistake.\u201d Given the lies told by the camp officers, it is not surprising that the internees from Lingfield were surprised to be taken on an ocean liner instead of a smaller ferry to the Isle of Man. Lohde&#8217;s remark about the \u201cwelcome\u201d with bayonets at the ready, forcing him aboard the <em>Dunera<\/em>, is consistent with other internees&#8217; accounts of the situation in Liverpool harbor and the reception on the <em>Dunera<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>The fact that Sigurd Lohde was detained at Camp Lingfield is also confirmed by himself. In the \u201c<span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27806'>Lingfield Ballade<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[82]  Sigurd Lohde: \u201cLingfield Ballade,\u201d bilingual original. Inventory number 4097 of the Jewish Museum of Australia.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>,\u201d he described everyday life at the \u201cLingfield health resort\u201d in ironic rhymes and mocked the guards. The <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/arandora-star-part-2\/\">occupation of the <em>Arandora Star<\/em><\/a> revealed part of the system used by the British authorities to occupy the five deportation transports. On July 9, 1940, Minister of Shipping <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27811'>Ronald Cross<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[83]  <a href=\"https:\/\/api.parliament.uk\/historic-hansard\/commons\/1940\/jul\/09\/loss-of-arandora-star\"><u>Minutes of Question Time<\/u><\/a> in the British House of Commons on July 9, 1940, accessed on August 20, 2023.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> responded to questions in the House of Commons on the occasion of the sinking of this second deportation transport to Canada by stating, \u201ethat all the Germans on board were Nazi sympathizers and that none came to this country as refugees.&#8221;<br><br>To support the claim that only enemies of Britain had been deported, Cross used the <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/british-deportationspart-2-2\/\">classification of many foreigners<\/a> as Nazis in category \u201cA.\u201d On board the <em>Arandora Star<\/em>, one in three Germans and Austrians had been proven to have been persecuted by the Nazis as Jews or for political reasons. Many had been imprisoned in <a href=\"\/en\/?p=16216\">concentration camps<\/a> after the pogroms in order to force them to leave the country and confiscate their assets. The <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27815'>deliberately false classifications<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[84]  The decisions of the tribunals \u201cat least reflected the opinion of the social class from which these King's Counsels (advisors to the king) came.\u201d Several tribunals used inadequate guidelines to \u201cexercise their anti-Bolshevik bias by declaring all veterans of the International Brigades who had fought fascism in Spain to be suspects.\u201d This is the assessment of Canadian internee Eric Koch in \u201cDeemed Suspect. A Wartime Blunder,\u201d Toronto 1980, pages 9\/10.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> made by the British placed perpetrators and victims on the same level, shaped the fate of thousands of refugees in England, and meant death for many victims of the Nazis. This leaves behind a great sense of unease.<br><br>The deportation of thousands of Nazi victims to Canada and Australia was neither in general nor in individual cases a British \u201cmistake,\u201d but part of the mass deportations of undesirable foreigners ordered by Churchill. It was published in England in September 1940, so it could not take into account the events on the <em>Dunera<\/em> and in the camps.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> attested to Winston Churchill and his Government in \u201cThe Internment of Aliens,\u201d the first book on internment and deportation, which was published in as early as September 1940.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Australia_%E2%80%9CBeyond_seven_mountains%E2%80%9D_and_seven_seas\"><\/span><strong>Australia: \u201cBeyond seven mountains\u201d<\/strong><br><strong>and seven seas<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>The <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27828'>250 German and 200 Italian survivors<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[88]  \u201eNominal Roll of German Internees for Melbourne\u201c, NAA_Item657104.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> of the sinking of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/arandora-star-part-2\/\">Arandora Star<\/a><\/em> were not exclusively Nazis or fascists. They were taken off the <em>Dunera<\/em> in Melbourne on September 3, 1940. In order to fill camp capacities (or rather, not to exceed the capacities of the camps intended for the other 2,000 internees), they were taken together with 96 mostly Jewish refugees \u2013 among them Sigurd Lohde \u2013 to Camp 3 in the vicinity of Tatura (State of Victoria). With the closure of Camps 7 and 8 near Hay (New South Wales) in the spring of 1941 and the transfer of the approximately 1,900 <em>Dunera<\/em> internees locked up there to Tatura, opportunities arose to accommodate the 96 men in a non-threatening environment.<br><br>In the camps, the internees mobilized against inactivity and depression. They organized extensive activities for sports, education, and self-administration. These included performances by the many professional musicians and theater people. In Camp 7 Hay, plays were written that addressed the situation of imprisonment in an ambiguous and ironic way. This was revealed by show titles such as \u201cHay Fever\u201d (literally also alluding to the place of detention) or songs such as \u201cSay Hay for Happy.\u201d At the end of 1940, \u201cSnow White \u2013 S3828\u201d premiered, in which <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27836'>\u201cDoc\u201d Kurt Sternberg<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[89]  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/de\/name\/nm0827911\/\"><u>Kurt Sternberg<\/u><\/a> (1899) worked as a film producer in Germany and in exile in Britain.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> took up motifs from Disney&#8217;s popular animated classic from 1937. In February 1941, he compiled <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27841'>elements from previous shows<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[90]  Albrecht D\u00fcmling, The Vanished Musicians, Lausanne, 2016, p. 262. See Kurt Lewinski's diary in the Archive of Judaica, University of Sydney (Shelf List 17).<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> under the title \u201cSnow White and the Seven Hay Days.\u201d The Snow White motif picked up on a commonality between the fairy tale character and the internees: all of them had been innocently driven from their homeland to a land \u201cbehind seven mountains.\u201d The chorus of one <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27850'>song<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[91]  Words by Hans Blau, music by Werner Baer (both Queen Mary Group), cited in D\u00fcmling aao, page 274.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> makes it clear that cultural activities were not an end in themselves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">&#8220;It\u2018s hope that keeps us going in our longing<br>For some happiness or luck.<br>So what if Destiny\u2019s opposed \u2013 we see it<br>Coming back.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sigurd Lohde was housed in Camp Tatura 3 together with many musicians who had been deported from <a href=\"\/en\/?p=21570\">Singapore<\/a> to Australia on the <em>Dunera<\/em> or the <em>Queen Mary<\/em>. There, too, people composed, sang, and performed theater. One example was the revue \u201cLaugh and Forget\u201d with numbers such as \u201cHow to Go to Bed\u201d and a <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27855'>fashion show<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[92]  Ibid, page 273.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>. It is not known whether and how Sigurd Lohde was involved in these productions.<br><br>By the spring of 1942, hundreds of internees had volunteered for British pioneer units or other war-related work and had been taken to England. After <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27859'>Pearl Harbor<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[93]  Japan entered the war with the attack on <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Angriff_auf_Pearl_Harbor\"><u>Pearl Harbor<\/u><\/a> on December 7, 1941, accessed on August 25, 2025.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> and the Japanese attack on the northern Australian city of <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27864'>Darwin<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[94]  Wikipedia on the <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luftangriffe_auf_Australien_von_1942_bis_1943\"><u>air raids on Australia<\/u><\/a>, accessed on 25 August 2025.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> on February 19, 1942, there was a shortage of labor in Australia due to increased conscription. As a result, many internees were deployed outside the camps to work in fruit harvesting, among other things. Accordingly, in April 1942, Lohde listed <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27869'>fruit picker<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[95]  Military file of Sigurd Sigismund Lohde, NAA_ItemNumber6254965.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> as his current occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"In_Australian_uniform\"><\/span><strong>In Australian uniform<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>The end of the internments can be dated to the spring of 1942. The internees who were still in Australia were called upon to enlist in the Australian Army. They were <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-11864'>promised<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[96]  Cf. Note from the Adjudant-General to the Australian Parliament, March 29, 1946. National Archives of Australia (NAA), NAA_ItemNumber4938132, sheet 28, paragraph d.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> a residence permit or naturalization Down Under.<br><br>Like many of his companions (including <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/heinz-dehn\/\">Dehn<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/dr-ernst-wasser\/\">Wasser<\/a>, <a href=\"\/en\/?p=24864\">Laufer, Schwarz<\/a>, etc.), Sigurd Lohde also enlisted. On April 8, 1942, he began his service with the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27874'>8th Employment Company<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[97]  Military file aao.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> (service number V377393). This unarmed unit consisted of up to <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27885'>600 former internees<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[98]  See War Diary of the 8th Emp Coy, Australian War Memorial AWM52 22\/1\/17.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>, exclusively of German and Austrian origin. It was not only the largest company, but also the Allied unit with the highest number of Jewish soldiers. The former internees were proud to now be serving the common war effort, even though many would have preferred to fight the Nazis with weapons.<br><br>There was also a shortage of non-commissioned officers. Sigurd Lohde was promoted to <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27888'>corporal<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[99]  Military files aao.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> after only one week of service. Military experience from World War I was not a general requirement (e.g., <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/franz-lebrecht\/\">Franz Lebrecht<\/a>) for this promotion, although Lohde had served in World War I. In October 1942, Lohde was promoted to acting sergeant and in September 1945 to sergeant. Even in uniform and after often hard work, many used their leave passes to go to the theater. And they themselves enriched the cultural life at their stations with <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27896'>concerts<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[100]  D\u00fcmling aao., page 283<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>. Among other things, the soldiers benefited from the freedoms granted to them by their popular commander, <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27900'>Captain Edward Broughton<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[101]  E.R. Broughton, <a href=\"https:\/\/adb.anu.edu.au\/biography\/broughton-edward-renata-tip-9595\"><u>biography<\/u><\/a> by Dunera Boy Klaus Loewald in the Australian Dictionary of Biography, accessed on 30.8.2025.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> (1884\u20131955). Due to the many cultural activities, the soldiers occasionally jokingly referred to their unit as the \u201cEntertainment Company.\u201d<br><br>In 1943, they took this to the extreme: \u201cDoc\u201d Kurt Sternberg rewrote and expanded parts of the \u201cSnow White\u201d program. The result was \u201cSgt. Snow White,\u201d an anti-fascist musical with a Seven Dwarfs feel and numerous allusions to their experiences in internment and the army, as well as German-English puns.<br><br>The play made it to the stage of Melbourne&#8217;s Union Theatre with three performances starting on April 17, 1943\u2014the anniversary of the transition from internment to the army. In addition to professionals and amateurs on and behind the stage, even Captain Broughton is said to have not shied away from a small <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27905'>cameo appearance<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[102]  Inglis, Spark et al. \u201eDunera Lives. Profiles\u201c, Melbourne 2020, page 13.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The linguistic arsenal included allusions, jokes, puns, and rewritten versions of popular songs. Because the performance was in English, the plates, knives, forks, etc. of Grimm&#8217;s dwarfs became \u201cplate-chens, knife-chens, fork-chens,\u201d etc. Or: The queen refers to dancers as &#8220;Jew-ropeans. Many of them from Austria. This could open up new paths, the reviewer suggested, alluding to Australia&#8217;s theater scene under the title \u201dNovel Show as Pointer to Theatrical Future.&#8221;<br><br>The New York-based Jewish weekly magazine &#8220;<span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27932'>Aufbau<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[108]  Irma Schnierer, \u201cAward-winning Europeans in Australia,\u201d in Aufbau (New York), January 21, 1944, page 10.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>,\u201c reported on January 21, 1944, that author Simon Hochberger (<em>Dunera<\/em>) and composer Werner Baer (<em>Queen Mary<\/em>) had won an anonymous song contest for soldiers organized by the Australian broadcaster ABC with \u201dSounds of Europe&#8221; and that the song had been broadcast nationwide. The judges were later surprised to have awarded the prize to foreigners, D\u00fcmling added. He smugly remarks that a <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-27935'>printing of the winning poem<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[109]  D\u00fcmling aao., page 306.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> was waived.<br><br>Australian \u201ePix\u201c Magazine headlined its richly illustrated story \u201cAlien Soldier\u2019s Show Twits Nazis\u201d and decorated it with large photos by Dunera boy Harry Jay. The reviewer described the evening as \u201ctheater of flesh and blood\u201d and \u201can eye-opener as to what can be done in a soldier show by imaginative and resourceful production, even with limited facilities and a mostly amateur cast.\u201c The author also mentioned Sigurd Lohde. A photo shows him as a lawyer whose stage name, \u201cDr. Blizzard of Oz,\u201d alludes to both The Wizard of Oz and a snowstorm.<br><br>After receiving very positive reviews in the Australian press, the play was performed three more times in May 1943. New performances did not take place until decades later. In Sydney, students from the JMC Academy <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/sergeant-snow-white-back-on-stage\/\">staged \u201cSgt. Snow White\u201d again<\/a>, exactly 81 years to the day after its premiere. His naturalization was dated August 11, 1945; Sigurd Lohde was therefore an Australian citizen when he was discharged into civilian life on August 30, 1945. Local historians consider it unlikely that \u201cZum K\u00e4ngeruh\u201d (or any restaurant for that matter) was located in this building: the curb in front of the building, which is still lowered today, and the facade design of the ground floor indicate that there used to be <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-28072'>carriage houses or garages<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[136]  Phone call with historian Joachim Perle.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> on the ground floor. Moreover, \u201cZum K\u00e4ngeruh\u201d probably did not exist for very long, as there are no further entries in the telephone directory or other evidence<br><br>Instead of the Lohdes, a <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-28076'>Herta D\u00e4hn<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[137]  Phone book 1958\/59 via ZLB. A \u201cR\u00fcgenklause\u201d at the end of the 1960s at Uhlandstra\u00dfe 43 is mentioned in \u201cBerlin wie es schreibt und isst\u201d (Berlin as it writes and eats), Munich, no date, page 178.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> is listed at Isoldestra\u00dfe 2 in 1958\/59 with the addition \u201cZur R\u00fcgenklause.\u201d However, no later entries can be found for her either. Looking back, the Lohde family now assumes \u201cthat he redesigned the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-28083'>bar in Herta&#8217;s guesthouse<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[138]  Emails from Kevin Lohde aao.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"On_stage_in_front_of_the_camera_and_microphone\"><\/span><b>On stage, in front of the camera and microphone<\/b><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sigurd Lohde was able to regain his footing as an <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-28087'>actor<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[139]  Straschek Collection aao.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>. His first engagement at the Renaissance Theater gave him support; among other things, he played in \u201cStaats-Affairen\u201d there in 1961; a recording was broadcast as a radio play. In the following years, he appeared at the Hebbel Theater (as the general director in \u201eMit den besten Empfehlungen\u201c \/ With Best Regards) and at the Theater Kom\u00f6die, among others. He had temporary engagements in Essen and at the Theater in der Josefstadt in Vienna, and from 1974 onwards he was on tour with the Grabowski Tour.<br><br>The <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-28090'>radio play database<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[140]  ARD radio play database aao.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> of the public broadcaster ARD links Sigurd Lohde with 90 radio plays. These include \u201cBerlin \u2013 Alexanderplatz\u201d by Hessischer Rundfunk, based on Alfred D\u00f6blin, and numerous productions by the former West Berlin pubcaster SFB. He played various roles in many episodes of \u201cDamals war&#8217;s \u2013 Geschichten aus dem alten Berlin\u201d (That&#8217;s How It Was \u2013 Stories from Old Berlin) by the German-language <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-28094'>US station RIAS<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[141]  Note: Numerous radio plays from the RIAS series are available on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/results?search_query=Damals+wars+%22Sigurd+lohde%22\"><u>YouTube<\/u><\/a>.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> His works range from adaptations of classics such as Shakespeare and Simenon to contemporary original material. A series based on C.S. Forester&#8217;s \u201cHoratio Hornblower\u201d books was intended for children, in which Lohde voiced El Supremo in several episodes.<br><br>For the GDR film distributor Progress, he worked on six cinema releases of films from France, Italy, and Czechoslovakia produced at the DEFA dubbing studio. Particularly noteworthy is the GDR co-production with France, \u201cThe Adventures of Till Ulenspiegel,\u201d with Gerard Philipe in the rogue character invented by deCoster and as director. In GDR cinemas, the role of Grippeous, played by <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-28097'>Raymond Souplex,<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[142]  Links to S. He was hired remarkably often by Artur Brauner&#8217;s Berlin-based <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-28103'>CCC-Filmkunst<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[143]  Film catalog of <a href=\"https:\/\/cccfilm.de\/alle-ccc-filme\/\"><u>CCC-Filmkunst<\/u><\/a>, search for Lohde, accessed August 20, 2025.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>, including in 1963 as a postman in \u201cScotland Yard jagt Dr. Mabuse\u201d (Scotland Yard Hunts Dr. Mabuse). For television, he appeared in Shakespeare adaptations such as \u201cAs You Like It\u201d and \u201cMuch Ado About Nothing.\u201d In around 20 years, in addition to his theater and radio work, he appeared in around 72 cinema and TV roles in front of the camera.<br><br>His last film was a mini-role as conductor in \u201c<span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-28108'>Taxi nach Leipzig<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[144]  Wikipedia on \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tatort:_Taxi_nach_Leipzig_(1970)\"><u>Taxi nach Leipzig<\/u><\/a>,\u201d TV premiere on November 29, 1970. Accessed on August 15, 2025.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d (Taxi to Leipzig). This TV crime drama, first broadcast in 1970, is significant for two reasons: Firstly, it dealt with an East-West plot: due to a murder case on the transit highway between the Federal Republic and West Berlin, the GDR authorities requested assistance from the West. From 1960 onwards, Sigurd and Herta lived in the Schmargendorf artists&#8217; colony at Steinr\u00fcckweg 3 \u2013 two doors away from Sigurd&#8217;s old apartment from 1934. In 1967, Sigurd and Herta moved to <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-28113'>D\u00fcnkelbergsteig 1a<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[145]  Last entry in the West Berlin telephone directory in 1978 via ZLB.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> in Zehlendorf.<br><br>According to the family, Sigurd Lohde treated Herta&#8217;s son from her first marriage, <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-28118'>Lothar Plagemann<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[146]  Emails from Kevin Lohde aao.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> (1935\u20132020), like his own child. Sigurd clearly inspired the young man, as he also chose to become an actor. Gerhard&#8217;s son <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-28125'>Hans-Georg<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[148]  Emails from Kevin Lohde aao.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> and Sigurd \u201cdeveloped a loving relationship.\u201d Sigurd helped the family, who lived in Tangerh\u00fctte (GDR; now the state of Saxony-Anhalt), \u201cprimarily financially and materially, sending books, packages, and even washing machine parts,\u201d and visited them often, according to the family.<br><br>Sigurd Lohde had an illegitimate daughter, Ingeborg, who was born during his time in Breslau from 1924 onwards. According to her relatives, contact was maintained throughout the years and Ingeborg visited Sigurd in West Berlin in the late 1950s. She left behind a son, a daughter, and a grandson \u2014another branch of Sigurd Lohde&#8217;s descendants.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn&#8217;t find gold,\u201d Lohde later joked, referring to the theme of his Australian movie. \u201cBut I made it through life and found my way back to Berlin,\u201d the \u201cTelegraf\u201d newspaper quoted <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-28131'>Sigurd Lohde<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[149]  Telegraf aao.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> as saying a few months after his return from Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>Sigurd Lohde died on July 22, 1977, at his vacation home in Bad Sooden-Allendorf (Hesse). His widow Herta, who had taken on his stage name Loder, initially lived in the Berlin district of Wilmersdorf. In registration documents, she was later listed in Bavaria and Schleswig-Holstein as <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-28135'>Herta Loder<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[150]  Straschek Collection aao.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>. She died on April 25, 1997, her 75th birthday, in Berlin.
