The commander of Camp Tatura 3 removed the elected representative of the Queen Mary Jews by order because he pointed out the problem too often and, at some point, too frustrated and too loudly. The internees&#8217; support of their elected camp leaders was defamed as mutiny and was to be broken with harassment. After a massive Nazi provocation, three Jews beated up a Nazi functionary. The Nazis were not punished. Together with 44 Italians (many were supporters of Mussolini&#8217;s fascists, i.e. in fact \u201cenemy aliens\u201d), they reached Australia aboard the <em>Queen Mary<\/em> on September 25, 1940. Among them were many families with little children. All of them were immediately locked up in the Tatura 3 camp.<br><br>The single Jewish men in this group were joined there by 150 Jewish civilian internees and <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/arandora-star-part-2\/\">250 <em>Arandora Star<\/em> survivors<\/a> of German and Austrian nationality who had disembarked from the Dunera in Melbourne on September 3, 1940.<br><br>The majority of the group of 250 consisted of businessmen sent abroad with Nazi blessing and members of the German merchant navy who had been captured on blockade runners, among other things. (&#8230;) The &nbsp;victimisation of any Internee or Prisoner of War holding anti-Nazi or anti-Fascist views, or for other reason, is prohibited.\u201d <br><br>The examples in this article show that this rule, which applied to all internment camps, did not go very far, at least in the Tatura Camps under the supervision of the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24201'>17th Garrison Battalion<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[3]  This unit was formed in July 1940 to guard the internment camps in the Tatura area. It was disbanded in July 1944. Cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/vwma.org.au\/explore\/units\/691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brief profile<\/a>, Virtual War Memorial Australia, retrieved on Jan 16, 2025.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to the 200 Britons of <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/arandora-star-part-3\/\">Italian descent<\/a>, other \u201cAustralian Italians\u201d were interned in the Tatura camps, who were considered supporters of the fascists. This group, like the <em>Queen Mary <\/em>internees, included wives and single women.<br><br>The Australian military officers in charge of the camps ignored the potential for conflict in housing the known enemy groups together. This ignorance was paired with militaristic arrogance at the worst clich\u00e9 level: the officers in charge of the 17th Garrison Battalion responsible for the Tatura region derived their authority to harass Jewish prisoners from their command. The Nazis, on the other hand, were even allowed to install a force of around <a href=\"\/en\/?p=23737\">80 thugs<\/a> known as \u201cSaalschutz\u201d. One of their tasks was to secure the election of the camp leader for Camp Tatura 3 desired by the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24222'>camp&#8217;s internal NSDAP leadership<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[4]  Cf. Seefeld has at all times adopted a truculent manner and following the recent transfer of two Australien female internees to the compound in which he is interned he protested in intemporate language that he would not take any responsibility for a possible outbreak of violence against people of different political views to himself. This statement ist undoubtedly a denial of responibility and an ad,mission of his inability to perform his duties as Leader.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The external cause was two Italian women who were transferred to the compound of the Jewish refugees and distinguished themeselves showing the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24226'>Hitler salute<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[7]  See Report of official visitor loc. cit., no. 16.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>. With his protests, Gerhard Seefeld lived up to his responsibility for the safety and protection of his fellow Jewish internees. However, because he had probably already rebelled too often and beeing ignored against being housed together with Nazis and fascists, he perhaps no longer had the submissive attitude of an order recipient expected by the officers. By saying that Seefeld did not want to support \u201cpolitical views other than his own\u201d, Sproat showed on the one hand that he was aware of the desire to separate Nazis\/fascists and Nazi victims. On the other hand, by ignoring the problem, he declared the Nazi opponents to be enemies of democracy and shifted any responsibility for later events onto the Jewish camp leaders.<br><br>After the order to discipline Seefeld and rebellious internees, Major Sproat was at peace. At least that&#8217;s what he claimed. High-ranking, experienced lawyers were usually appointed for this purpose. In the case of the Tatura 3 Camp, this was <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24218'>Charles Leonard Gavan Duffy<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[9]  Wikipedia about <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Charles_Leonard_Gavan_Duffy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charles Leonard Gavan Duffy<\/a>, retrieved Jan 16, 2025.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> (1882-1961), a judge at the Supreme Court of the Australian state of Victoria who was about to retire. He was the contact person for internees for complaints about the camps, among other things. On-site visits resulted in long lists of individual general and personal problems that the camp commanders had to deal with.<br><br>The British government&#8217;s contact person in Australia, Major Julian Layton, was responsible for recruiting soldiers for the British Pioneer Corps from the spring of 1941 onwards and later for clusure of the internment camps for internees from Britain and Singapore.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, this proved to be a big mistake. The internees &#8211; including the Italians &#8211; did not allow themselves to be fooled. The above-mentioned report proves this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9CJewish_mutineers%E2%80%9C\"><\/span>&#8220;<strong>Jewish mutineers<\/strong>&#8220;?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, Seefeld and his deputy Paul Schlesinger organized an extraordinary meeting for a new election on 5 July, as ordered. The camp commander told us that he considered the internees to be <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24235'>mutineers as a result<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[11]  Report of the official visitor loc.cit., page 34, no. 33.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d, the official visitor recorded without further comment. The previous dismissal of the internee representatives Bianchi and Joseph due to (allegedly) \u201cdistasteful\u201d complaints is mentioned there, also without further explanation, while Seefeld and Schlesinger had a<em>llegedly not been dismissed because of their complaints<\/em>.<br><br>After Seefeld and Schlesinger informed the camp commandant of their new choice, he repeated the suspensions. He also announced a series of harassments against the internees: \u201cI will block all incoming and outgoing mail until I am informed of two new names.\u201d Sproat then asked the representative of the Italian group, Giovanni Batista Reginato, and later Dr. Richard Koch, to accept nominations as camp leader. Both refused.<br><br>Dr Koch organized a meeting of Germans and Italians on 6 July. The resolution passed there firstly stated that they fully support the two representatives Seefeld and Schlesinger, who had been re-elected the previous day, and that they did not accept the refusal to forward the mail. The commander was asked to forward a telegram to the Official Visitor in order to involve him in a clarification on the spot. Major Sproat was obviously not interested in the participation of neutral persons in a mediation. He doggedly <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24239'>refused to forward<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[12]  Statement G. Seefeld loc.cit., p. 4.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> the resolution until a new Camp Leader had been elected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Insults_and_harassment_in_response\"><\/span><strong>Insults and harassment in response<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Official Visitor and Gerhard Seefeld agreed that Sproat&#8217;s superior, the commander of the 17th Garrison Battalion, Lt. Col. Garrison Battalion commander Lt. Col. William Thomas Tackaberry, \u201cin the course of what Seefeld called an intemperate speech, compared the Jewish or non-Nazi internees unfavorably to the Fascist Italians, saying that they former pretended to be friends of Britain (&#8230;) but by their conduct showed that they were less to be respected than the Italian Fascist internees in the same compound.\u201d Seefeld regarded the officer&#8217;s appearance as an <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24244'>insult to the many internees<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[13]  Report of the official visitor loc.cit., Statement G. Seefeld loc.cit., p. 49.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> who had nothing to do with the criticism of Seefeld&#8217;s behavior, the report noted. Even the representative of the Italian fascists, <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24248'>Reginato<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[14]  Report of the official visitor loc.cit. no. 33.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>, criticized that the speech would affect the relationship between his group and others in the camp.<br><br>In his statement, Gerhard Seefeld described Tackaberry&#8217;s speech as \u201chighly irregular\u201d. It amounted to \u201cintimidation and harassment\u201d. Seefeld recalled, among other things, the camp regulations and the fact that<\/p>\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201eno references to Fascists, anti-Fascists, Nazis and anti-Nazis are to be made inside the compound to any gatherings, and it seems strange, that a Commanding Officer should not know his Regulations better. There can also be no greater insult to a community of mainly Jewish refugeees who fled from Nazi oppression, who saw the horrors of the Nazi-Concentration Camps to be told that they are \u201aunfriendly\u2018, meaning that they are more ore less enemies of the British Empire \u2026\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seefeld also quoted two sections of the camp rules published by Tackaberry himself in March 1941:<\/p>\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201eAn internee shall not be liable tob e punished for submitting a petition or complaint with regard to the conditions of his internment even though the petition or complant is found to be groundless.\u201c (\u00a7 9(6))<br \/>\u201eThe victimisation of any Internee or prisoner of war holding Anti-Nazi oder Anti-Fascist views, or for any other reasons, ist prohibited.\u201c (\u00a7 15)<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24251'>peaceful coexistence<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[15]  Statement G. Seefeld loc.cit., p. 5\/6.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> of the opposing groups in his compound only worked because he and Reginato had known each other for 15 years and were able to reconcile their differences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Harassments_%E2%80%93_a_selection\"><\/span><strong>Harassments &#8211; a selection<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Official Visitor&#8217;s report referred to a plethora of complaints. Regarding the order to withhold mail, Tackaberry stated that the mail was to be handed out by the Camp Leader. As there was no Camp Leader, no mail could be issued. The Official Visitor stated that this was a punishment.<br><br>According to Seefeld, all other groups in the camp had received their mail, unlike the Jews. Following Tackaberry&#8217;s speech, the Jews were \u201canti-British\u201d, but still not enough Nazis or Fascists to enjoy the same privileges as these actual enemies of the Empire, Seefeld sarcastically remarked.<br><br>In his report of July 21, 1941, the Official Visitor mentioned a number of other points in connection with Seefeld&#8217;s dismissal that could be interpreted as <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24255'>punishment and harassment<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[16]  Report of the official visitor loc.cit., page 34, no. 33.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>. Here is a selection:<\/p>\n\n\n<ul>\n<li>The internees Duldig and Stiwelband (both names misspelled in the document) criticized the separation from their sons. Artur Duldig (19) and Oswald Stiwelband (18) were transferred to other compounds from January 2 to May 12 and again from July 11 (i.e. after the removal of the camp leaders, dunera.de) to make room for new arrivals. The two Jewish internees suspected that the fascists and <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24258'>Nazis in their compound<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[17]  Ibid, no. 37.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> were to be reinforced by new arrivals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-01f530ff wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"margin-top:0;margin-bottom:0\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<ul>\n<li>Internee Raffael Holper also complained about being separated from his son Allesandro (22), who was transferred to another compound.<\/li>\n<li>A similar complaint by internee Bratspies was answered by Sproat and Tackaberry&#8217;s superior with the almost derisive remark that it seemed difficult for parents and son to talk to each other for more than 10 to 15 minutes. They could \u201ctalk at any time <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24261'>from one compound to the other<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[18]  Army HQ, reply to the official visitor\u2019s report, aao. File MC 20\/8\/p (not dated), p 3 no. 21.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> over a distance of about 25 feet (7.62 meters)\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>The internee Lichtenstern asked to bring his five-and-a-half-year-old son Kurt, who was staying at the boarding school, to visit the camp during a week&#8217;s vacation. The <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24265'>ban was justified<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[19]  Ibid, no. 42.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> by the shortness of the upcoming vacation. He was allowed to apply again for longer vacations at a later date.<\/li>\n<li>The internee Bischofswerder was to be taken to hospital on doctor&#8217;s orders. The visitor was told that <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24268'>no ambulance<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[20]  Report of the official visitor loc.cit., no. 11.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> was available for this purpose.<\/li>\n<li>Werner Baer criticized on behalf of a group of professional musicians that a piano financed by donations from the Jewish Society had been taken away and transported to Compound A. This was a punishment for not choosing the camp leader. Tackaberry and superiors, however, claim that the donor had left the placement of the instrument to the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24271'>camp commander<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[21]  Army HQ, reply loc.cit.,\u00a0 no. 40.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>, who had exercised this right. \u201cWe were left with the impression that this change &#8211; whether temporary or permanent &#8211; was meant as a punishment,\u201d commented the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24273'>official visitor<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[22]  Report of the official visitor loc.cit., no. 33.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"320\" src=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Tatura1_1943_01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23954 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Tatura1_1943_01.jpg 500w, https:\/\/dunera.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/Tatura1_1943_01-300x192.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small talk across barbed wire and guard posts? Both women accommodated there were seriously ill and disturbed each other&#8217;s sleep. Separate individual accommodation was therefore appropriate. \u201cThis can no longer be permitted\u201d, commented the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24278'>superior department<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[23]  Ibid, no. 41.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> in Melbourne laconically.<\/li>\n<li><span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24280'>Ms. Goldstein<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[24]  Ibid, no. 45.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>, who was ill too, also criticized her communal accommodation, while young Nazi and fascist girls were assigned individual rooms.<\/li>\n<li>The participation of representatives of Compound D in a long-prepared table tennis tournament of the four compounds was forbidden by order without justification, Seefeld noted.<\/li>\n<li>Internee Fischer&#8217;s question, taken over by the Official Visitor, as to why he was not permitted to marry an internee, was answered brusquely: \u201cIt is the policy of the authorities that\u00a0<span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24282'>no such marriages are permitted<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[25]  Ibid, no. 22 and Report loc.cit. no. 25.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> during internment.\u201d <span style=\"font-size: revert;\"> This decision was later reversed; the <\/span><span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24286'>wedding<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[26]  Cf. Service and Casualty Forms for Hans Fischer (NAA_ItemNumber8615266) and Lotte Calm (NAA_ItemNumber8615249).<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"font-size: revert;\">took place on September 8, 1941.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The officers were apparently not even afraid to include the provision of food for the internees in their list of punishments. <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24290'>Seefeld noted<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[27]  Statement Seefeld loc.cit.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>:<\/p>\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201eDuring the inspection of the Koitchen, Liet. Gordon complained the smell. He was told that the meatration that morning was not up to the mark and that further there was hardly any firewood left.\u201c The officer replied that he could do nothing, \u201esince complaints had to be made through the Camp Leader.\u201c He explained this, knowing full well that there was no one accepted by the commander. At the same time, it was said that the officers to be contacted, Sproat and Tackaberry, had suddenly fallen ill and could not be contacted.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9EEnemy_propaganda%E2%80%9C_and_Hitlers_books\"><\/span>\u201eEnemy propaganda\u201c and Hitler&#8217;s books<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The confiscation of the book \u201cThe Internment of Aliens\u201d by the commander can also only be seen as harassment, although responsibility was passed up the chain of command to Southern Command. There, the book by the British author <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24293'>Francois Lafitte<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[28]  Francois Lafitte \u201eThe Internment of Aliens\u201c was the first book about Britain's treatment of the refugees. It was published in England in September 1940, so it could not take into account the events on the <em>Dunera<\/em> and in the camps.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> was classified as \u201c<span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24297'>enemy propaganda<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[29]  Reply of Army HQ loc.cit, no. 14.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d. Franz Eichenberg, spokesman for Compound A, which housed many of the Dunera Boys who had disembarked in Melbourne, wrote: \u201eThis book is to be bought in practically every bookshop throughout the British Empire. (\u2026) The book can only be considered as a very good British propaganda at all, for it shows clearly that the British Government has not hesitated to admit an repair mistakes \u2026 Nothing should be done to create the impression, as it the authrities are not prepared to let the truth be know.\u201c The book also mentions <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24300'>15 Internees<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[30]  Franz Eichenberg to the official visitor from July 7, 1941 in NAA_ItemNumber3357204, p. 41.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> by name.<br><br>The documents, which included internal correspondence between various military institutions and with the Official Visitor, does not show that the Official Visitor recommended any measures.<br><\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"536\" src=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/19420926_Melbourne_AWM.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-23568 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/19420926_Melbourne_AWM.jpg 800w, https:\/\/dunera.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/19420926_Melbourne_AWM-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dunera.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/19420926_Melbourne_AWM-768x515.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMein Kampf\u201d and another of Hitler&#8217;s books were photographed in the window of a Melbourne bookshop for the \u201cHerald\u201d newspaper on September 26, 1942. In NAA_ItemNumber380404, p. 8f.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> intervened. He reminded the Minister of the Army, Percy Spender, among other things, that 50 Nazi opponents were still interned in the Camp Tatura 1 Compound A. Weil die Briten laufend Internierte freilassen, sinke deren Zahl \u201ethus giving them a feeling of greater isolation in the midst of hostile surroundings\u201c. He advised against plans to merge Compounds A and B, which were previously separated by barbed wire. This would mean, \u201ethat the unfortunate refugees will be more than ever at the mercy of the Nazis, who will surround them in larger numbers and with more hostile spirit.\u201c These people who had to flee from Hitler now had to listen to Nazi songs and Nazi cheers. The Bishop asked the minister to move the refugees and Nazi opponents to another camp in the Tatura area with like-minded people. \u201eIt seems nothing less than lamentable that a matter of convenience should be allowed to render Australia liable to the charge both of inhumanitry and of breach of faith.\u201c<br><br>On October 15, 1941, the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24308'>minister<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[32]  Reply to Pilcher from Oct. 15, 1941. Ibid, p. 6.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> replied that there were only 30, not 50 people involved. At the same time, the question was twisted and it was explained that they were 30 \u201clocal internees\u201d &#8211; i.e. Nazis arrested in Australia. That was too few for a separate camp or transfer to one with other refugees. \u201eIt was recently decided that, as certain re-arrangments of United Kingdom internees were to be made, the thirty local internees (means: Australian Nazis, the author) would as an experiment shortly be placed in the same camp as a certain group of United Kingdom internees, the majority of whom are Jewish, with whom it is considered they may live in harmony\u201c.<br><br>A memo from the army leadership to the minister dates from the same day: it claims that in the camp proposed for the \u201cexperiment\u201d with the 30 \u201clocal internees\u201d, contains interned Jews who from a security standpoint are <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24311'>regarded as \u201adoubtful\u2018<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[33]  Minute paper from Oct. 15, 1941, ibid, p. 5.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-border-color is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"border-color:#d45847;border-width:4px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--30);box-shadow:var(--wp--preset--shadow--sharp);flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nazis too &#8230;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the sake of completeness, it should be noted that even Nazis did not want to live behind a common barbed wire fence with Jews. A group of five German-born <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24313'>Australian Nazi internees<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[34]  J.A. Pietzcker, Consul for Switzerland, to Army, Southern Command from Sep 30, 1941, in NAA_ItemNumber347069\u00a0 p. 40.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>, among others, demanded this. The Picker and Frerck spouses and the Frerck sister-in-law Bachmann were named as <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24316'>authors<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[35]  The persons mentioned arrived 1926 in Australia and were known NSDAP-members. Ms. Bachmann was sister of Ms. Frerck. Personnel files in NAA, retrieved Dec 21, 2024.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>. Apart from Bachmann, the Australian personal files contain NSDAP identity cards for these people, among other things.<br><br>What the Nazis could get away with <a href=\"\/en\/?p=23737\">in the Tatura camps<\/a> emerges from another work, which quotes from a chronicle of an interned Nazi: \u201eWe marched in celebration of the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24321'>German victories<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[36]  David Henderson, \u201e<a href=\"https:\/\/espace.library.uq.edu.au\/view\/UQ:331628\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bycatch of War<\/a>: The German-Australien Internees 1939-1945\u201c (2006), retrieved march 10, 2025. The author ignores the role of the Nazi party in the camp; there were only \u201ca few ardent Nazis\u201d and others who had \u201cretained a strong sense of loyalty to the Fatherland\u201d. The source of the \u201cchronicle\u201d citated is not named.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>, despute the camp autorities.\u201c<br><br>Further incidents show that the commanding officers did not only play off Nazis and fascists against Jewish internees and Nazi opponents, at least in the Tatura camps: In the Tatura 1 and Tatura 3 camps, Nazis were welcome as camp leaders by the commandants. NSDAP organizations worked under the watchful eye of the military secret service ran an illegal print shop and even operated a \u201c<span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24325'>Saalschutz<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[37]  Intelligence report from Feb 12, 1944 in NAA_ItemNumber428433, p. 15.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d, which had to enforce the result desired by the Nazis in elections of the Camp Leaders.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Heard_nothing_saw_nothing_punished_nothing\"><\/span><strong>Heard nothing, saw nothing, punished nothing<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The calming down reported by Major Sproat after the dismissal of Seefeld and Schlesinger had therefore not taken place at all. On the contrary: Major Sproat and his superior, Lieutenant Colonel Tackaberry, had exacerbated the problems and conflicts with their insults and inappropriate collective punishments. The next serious incident occurred two months later.<br><br>Young Nazis had sung Nazi songs at the fence between their Compound D and Compound C of the Jewish refugees on September 28, 1941 at around 7.40 pm. Possibly to celebrate a military success of the Wehrmacht. The Jews stated on record that they had been provoked by anti-Semitic songs. The Nazis explained that it had been children and harmless folklore. Major Sproat stated that no soldier with knowledge of the language was present so that there was therefore no proof of the nature of the songs. <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24329'>By that he acquitted the Nazis<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[38]  \u201eDisorders at No.3 camp Tatura\u201c, Report to Army HQ, not dated (possibly end of October 1941). In NAA_ItemNumber347069, p. 14 f.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>. In any case, it would have been children under the age of ten, he said, again following the Nazis&#8217; claim. These exercised power behind the scenes in the <a href=\"\/en\/?p=23737\">Nazi compounds<\/a> of Tatura Camps 1 and 3.<br><br>The character of the Nazis&#8217; repertoire is illustrated by their <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-23755'>Tatura-Lied<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[39]  Quoted from Albrecht D\u00fcmling \"The vanished musicians\", Cologne 2016, page 270.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>&#8216; with the refrain<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPatience, comrades, be of good cheer<br>Once Germany&#8217;s won,<br>all will be well again\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the allegedly non-racist folklore performance prompted the Australian NSDAP \u201cOrtsgruppenleiter\u201d <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24334'>Waldemar Weber<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[40]  Waldemar Weber was the head of NSDAP in Sydney. He had been transferred from Camp 1 to Camp 3 to be with his wife Irma Nora. Both had come to Australia in 1937. Cf. personal files NAA_ItemNumber9902329, NAA_ItemNumber8613358, NAA_ItemNumber8613829 and NAA_ItemNumber9902792.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>, who was imprisoned in Compound C together with Jews, to assist his fellow choristers over the fence with multiple loud shouts of \u201cBravo\u201d and \u201cHeil Hitler\u201d and the Nazi salute. Weber himself confirmed this violation of the camp rules when questioned.<br><br>Unsurprisingly, the Jews from Singapore were highly agitated after both incidents. Especially as Weber&#8217;s wife Irma Nora, also described as a Nazi by Sproat, was also provocative. She complained to the battalion commander Tackaberry, who had been called in to help by the overstrained Sproat, about an alleged insult as a \u201cNazi swine\u201d by a Jewish internee. The <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24338'>Jewish woman criminalized<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[41]  Major Sproat, \u201eReport of disturbance \u201aD\u2018 Compound\u201c from Sep 29, 1941. In NAA_ItemNumber347069, p. 45f.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> in this way (the name \u201cTylly Heimann\u201d in the document is incorrect and ambiguous) was not afraid to make an agitated and gesticulating complaint in the presence of battalion commander. The Jewish woman was locked in a solitary cell, allegedly \u201conly\u201d for an hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_brawl_behind_bars\"><\/span><strong>A brawl behind bars<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exited <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24342'>Jewish internees<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[42]  Report to HQ, loc.cit, page 5.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> &#8211; Beer, Liebrecht and Bratspies were named<a name=\"_ednref1\" href=\"#_edn1\">[i]<\/a> &#8211; had then beaten up Mr. \u201cOrtsgruppenleiter\u201d Weber \u201cas a direct result of his behaviour\u201d and inflicted him \u201ca small cut\u201d on his head. A guard had prevented worse by firing a warning shot. \u201cOne Jewish internee was hit in the face by a stone, resulting in very slight injury\u201d, Major Sproat explicitly worried about the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24345'>balance of pain<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[43]  Major Sproat, \u201eReport \u2026\u201c loc.cit.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>. Weber was transferred back to Tatura Camp 1. He had previously been taken from there to end his separation from his wife.<br><br>The representative of the fascist <em>Queen Mary<\/em> Italian Reginato probably also played an inglorious role in this matter: among other things, he demanded the intervention of the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24348'>Swiss representation<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[44]  Switzerland had taken over the representation of the interests of German prisoners of war and internees.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> \u201cafter a violent attack by Jews on one of our section\u201d of the camp, thus placing himself on an \u201c<span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24352'>internment axis<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[45]  Major Sproat, \u201eReport \u2026\u201c loc.cit., p. 50.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d with the German Nazis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Seen_but_not_identified\"><\/span><strong>Seen but not identified<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later that evening, a \u201c<span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24355'>Palestinian internee<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[46]  This refers to German Templars, mostly Nazi supporters, who had been deported from Palestine by the British in 1941.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>\u201d had tried to climb over the fence from Compound C to Compound D. This was also prevented by warning shots from a watchtower. However, there was perhaps no effective separation. A separation of the two groups was only possible \u201cwithin the limits of the available space\u201d, promptly followed the excuse with which the instruction was undermined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"A_Jewish_intrigue\"><\/span><strong>A Jewish intrigue?<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remarkable is the conclusion that <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24836'>Battalion Commander Tackaberry<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[48]  Confidential report of the battalion commander, Lieutenant Colonel Tackaberry, 29.9.1941, in NAA Ibid, page 45.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> reported to his superiors, contrary to Sproat&#8217;s assertion that everything is calm:<\/p>\n\n\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">\u201eThe compound concerned was giben a great deal of trouble during a period of several moths., and the Jewstherin are continually asking fort he removal of the Nazis and Fascists who are interned with them. (\u2026) I am of the opinion that the disturbance of last night and today was a planned demonstration in ordert o advance their case for the removal of the Nazis and Fascists. None of the Jews, including the Compound Leader, evinced any desire to help the Camp Commandant to restore order.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Responsibility is thus shifted to a Jewish plot and mutiny (see above). This thoroughly anti-Semitic language is reminiscent of <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/ther-duneras-journeypart-5\/\">Commander Scott<\/a>, for whom the Nazis on board the <em>Dunera<\/em> were an excellent group and the Jews were troublemakers. The simple realization and experience that you don&#8217;t lock up hostile groups together had not even reached those responsible in the Australian army when it was too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Addendum\"><\/span>Addendum<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Australian Army remobilized veterans of the First World War of all ranks for service in their home country. Their tasks included, among others, guarding internees and prisoners of war.<br><br><strong>Thomas William Tackaberry<\/strong>, born in Ireland in 1879, was brought out of retirement in 1939. He was appointed commanding officer of the 17th Garrison Battalion and commander of the assigned internment camps with the rank of lieutenant colonel in September 1940. He was discharged from service on April 11, 1942. Shortly afterwards, in a letter to the editor of a newspaper, he rejected the claim that the internees were enemies. \u201cIn fact, they were mostly classified as &#8216;<span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-24831'>Refugee Aliens<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[49]  Cyril Pearl \u201eThe Dunera Scandal\u201c, Angus &amp; Robertson 1983, p. 209.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>&#8216; and not as &#8216;Enemy Aliens&#8217; and had left Germany and Austria because of their hatred and fear of &#8216;Hitlerism&#8217; and &#8216;Nazism&#8217;.\u201d This does not answer the question of why he treated the refugees as he did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-bottom is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left caption wp-block-paragraph\">Major James Sproat in December 1942.<br>Photo: C.T.
