mass deportation of internees as well as prisoners of war was carried out in Great Britain from May 1940. This article provides an overview of the five transports that deported some 10,000 men to Canada and Australia in June and July 1940. The fact that most of them were friends of Great Britain and had hoped to escape Nazi persecution there did not interest Prime Minister Winston Churchill and his ministers. Their policy decisions followed an xenophobic and anti-Semitic campaign in the right-wing populist press, which were seized upon by Conservative politicians.<br><br>In the same haste, they negotiated with Canada and Australia the admission of civilian internees and prisoners of war from Germany, Austria and Italy. The authorities and media of both receiving countries were told that they had to accommodate prisoners of war or internees of category &#8220;A&#8221; or &#8220;B&#8221; &#8211; i.e. in no case Nazi opponents of category &#8220;C&#8221;. Between June 24 and July 10, 1940, more than 10,000 men were put on the deportation route overseas in five ships. Only up to 2,500 had actually been placed in Category &#8220;A&#8221; beforehand. In 1939, the 183 meter long 20,000 GRT ship was requisitioned by the British Navy. It was designed to travel at speeds of up to 18 knots (<span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-12586'>33 km\/h<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[2]  1 knot corresponds to one nautical mile or 1852 meters of speed per hour.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>) and, in civilian service, was certified to carry 1,570 passengers in three classes. Its official capacity as a troopship is not known. In 1943, she was sunk off Spain. With her older sister ship <em>Duchess of Atholl<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/ida-dehn\/?lang=en\">Ida Dehn<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/the-nussbaum-family\/?lang=en(\u00f6ffnet in neuem Tab)\">Nussbaum family<\/a><strong>,<\/strong> among others, completed the first overseas leg of their escape to Australia in January 1939. The more as 3,000 internees, guards and sailors on board escaped with horror. <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/the-duneras-journey\/?lang=en\">Legends<\/a> have grown up around this incident, and Nazis probably had a hand in the later creation and spread of false information about a German submarine would have accompanied the <em>Dunera<\/em> at times.<br><br>The 57-day voyage from Liverpool to Australia proved to be a horror trip in view of the robberies and violent actions of the guard crew against the internees. Source: Australian War Museum no. 7441966.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-buttons is-content-justification-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-buttons-is-layout-a89b3969 wp-block-buttons-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-button post-button\"><a class=\"wp-block-button__link has-text-align-center wp-element-button\" href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/the-duneras-journeypart-1\/?lang=en\">The Dunera&#8217;s Journey<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/details>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Number_games\"><\/span>Number games<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"two-column\">Among the 6,753 internees of the <em>SS Duchess of York<\/em>, the<em> SS Ettrick<\/em> and the<em> Arandora Star<\/em> there were &#8220;2,108 civilian interned Germans and Austrians of category &#8216;A&#8217;, 2,290 civilian interned Germans and Austrians of categories &#8216;B&#8217; and &#8216;C'&#8221;, Michael Hallerberg takes from a memorandum of the British to Canada&#8217;s government of July 28, 1940. Why there was no information about the <em>SS Sobieski<\/em> is unknown. Hallerberg, however, refers to the Chamberlain memorandum mentioned above.<br><br><span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-15180'>Eric Koch<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[31]  Cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eric_Koch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wikipedia<\/a> (German) about the then 20-year-old Eric Koch (1919, Frankfurt\/Main - 2018, Toronto) who was arrested in May 1940 with other students and professors at his university in Cambridge and deported to Canada. After working for decades, including in management positions, for public broadcasting, he worked as a writer. In addition to three sci-fi novels and fiction with autobiographical features, he published \u2018Deemed Suspect. A Wartime Blunder\u2018, he published a research and critical assessment of the British mass deportations to Canada in 1940.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>, one of those deported to Canada, gives more precise figures. According to him, 1308 category \u2018B\u2019 and \u2018C\u2019 internees, 405 Italians and 782 prisoners of war were brought to Canada on the Ettrick &#8211; a total of almost 2,500 men. <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-15184'>Koch puts the number<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[32]  Quoted from Eric Koch, \u201eDeemed Suspect. A Wartime Blunder\u201c, Toronto 1980, page 262.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> of those deported to Canada on the ships Duchess of Vork, Ettrick and Sobiesky at 2,112 category \u2018A\u2019 internees, including 178 refugees, 2,290 category \u2018B\u2019 and \u2018C\u2019 internees, 405 Italians and 1,868 prisoners of war. That&#8217;s a total of 6,675 men. This does not include the \u201cpassengers\u201d of the <em>Arandora Star<\/em> and the <em>Dunera<\/em>.<br><br>Different original sources and different counting methods may lead to rather small differences in individual figures. Nevertheless, it is clear how the British government operated with incorrect information. Nevertheless, it is clear how the British government used incorrect information to conceal the composition of the deportees. The number of deportees in category &#8220;A&#8221; is three and a half times the 569 persons officially so classified according to the tribunals&#8217; interviews. One background of the difference may be that all seamen of the German merchant navy who had been detained since the beginning of the war were automatically classified as &#8220;A&#8221; without being checked, in order to be able to <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-12670'>imprison them immediately<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[33]  Cf. Gillman loc.cit., page 169<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>. This meant that she was not treated as a prisoner of war, who was protected by international law, whereas civilian internees enjoy no legal protection whatsoever due to the lack of international treaties.<br>Thus, a high number of potential Nazis (category &#8220;A&#8221;) was gathered and the urgency and the quantity of &#8220;enemy&#8221; persons could be dramatized to the Canadian authorities.<br><br>In the end, about 1,700 members of the German merchant navy (category &#8220;A&#8221;), 2,700 internees (categories &#8220;B&#8221;, &#8220;C&#8221;), 400 Italians and 1,950 prisoners of war &#8211; together 6,750 men &#8211; were deported to Canada by July 15, 1940. Had the Arandora Star reached its destination unscathed, there would have been 2,200 sailors, 1,700 internees, 1,100 Italians, and 1,400 POWs &#8211; for a total of 6,400, <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-12672'>the Gillmans calculated<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[34]  Ibid, page 205.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<br><br>But they also found that Chamberlain&#8217;s statements to the War Cabinet on July 3, 1940, were erroneous. Among other things, he had stated that only &#8220;B&#8221; internees were aboard the <em>Ettrick<\/em>. In fact, quite a few <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-12674'>&#8220;C&#8221; internees<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[35]  Ibid., page 206.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> were deported overseas on this ship &#8211; i.e. people classified by the British themselves as Nazi opponents or friendly foreigners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"9_points_to_a_war_crime\"><\/span><strong>9 points to a war crime<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The following bullet points summarize the British deportations overseas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>British officers of several camps told internees they could move freely in the destination country and join their families. This lie caused many to &#8220;volunteer&#8221; to Canada believing in the veracity of this information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As solo travellers, the five ships were defenceless against the German U-boats operating there as soon as they passed through the North Channel between Scotland and Northern Ireland and left.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>None of the five ships were identifiable as prisoner transports, such as by Red Cross signs. The <em>Dunera<\/em>, for example, had a military livery and visible machine guns on deck. The <em>Arandora Star<\/em> carried, among other things, two <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-12677'>4.7-inch guns<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[36]  Ibid, page 189.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> (12cm) visibly<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All five transport ships were deliberately and unacceptably overcrowded, in some cases by double.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Access to the decks was blocked on all ships by barbed wire barriers, except for small passages. This blocked escape routes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Of none of the five transports was it known that the prescribed evacuation and emergency drills had been carried out.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <em>Dunera<\/em> internees were not informed of their destination, or were told incorrectly, so that many had &#8220;volunteered&#8221; under false pretenses. The actual destination, Australia, became apparent only at the first stopover in Freetown, Africa.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prisoners of war (among them many Nazis) were treated much better than the interned Jews, Nazi opponents and Italians.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On several ships there were assaults by the guards. Including the robbery of valuables, destruction of documents, violent attacks and anti-Semitic assaults with the knowledge and support of the commanding officers, the situation on the <em>Dunera<\/em> was particularly bad.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Anti-semitic_threats_and_%E2%80%9Cinsulted_soldiers_honor%E2%80%9C\"><\/span><strong>Anti-semitic <\/strong>t<strong>hreats and &#8220;insulted soldier&#8217;s honor<\/strong>&#8220;<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"two-column\">Jewish internees, where they were housed in the same room with Nazis, felt threatened to life and limb by the possibility of violent attacks by the racists. They demanded a spatial separation of the two groups, e.g. on the <em>Dunera<\/em>. This threat is indirectly confirmed by the opposing side. <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-12680'>Georg Friemel<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[37]  Michael Hallerberg loc.cit., page 61.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> truly had no reason to complain about accommodation and care. This colonel of the Nazi Air Force saw &#8220;the honor of the German soldiers systematically insulted by being housed together with Jews, &#8216;traitors to the fatherland&#8217; (i.e. political opponents, pd).&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_end_of_the_internment_policy\"><\/span><strong>The end of the internment policy<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"two-column\">The <em>Dunera<\/em> was the last deportation ship. The sinking of the <em>Arandora Star<\/em> and its 800 victims had immediately triggered public and parliamentary criticism of Churchill&#8217;s deportation policy. When the events on the <em>Dunera<\/em> became known in Britain, the policy was no longer tenable and Churchill declared it a &#8220;regrettable and deplorable mistake\u201c. The Australian camps were liquidated by mid-1942. From there, 1,135 mostly Jewish internees went to England ro serve as pioneer soldiers or otherwise contribute to the victory over the Nazis. The status of merchant mariners in Australian camps was changed from &#8220;internee&#8221; to &#8220;prisoner of war&#8221; at about the same time. The last men in this group were repatriated in 1947. Internees who wished to remain in Australia acquired this right by &#8220;volunteering&#8221; for service in an Army labor unit formed specifically for them. &#8220;We are defending the 70th line of defense,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/franz-lebrecht\/\">Franz Lebrecht<\/a> later mocked. Like many of his fellow internees, he would have liked to fight fascism with a gun.<br><br>In Britain itself, about 8,000 of the 19,000 internees had been released by the end of 1940. Just under 1,300 would have joined the Pioneer Corps. By 1942, 5,000 people &#8211; mostly on the Isle of Man &#8211; were still in <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-12682'>British custody<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[38]  Cf. <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.nationalarchives.gov.uk\/collar-lot-britains-policy-internment-second-world-war\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The National Archives<\/a> (UK) blog, retrieved Aug 30, 2023.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span>.<br><br>In many aspects, the mass deportations violated international agreements.
