Churchill was in need of explanation for the bad treatment of friends of the country. What does a government do in such a situation? This is illustrated by a linguistic joke.. For by adding a single letter, the British &#8220;Parliament&#8221; becomes a &#8220;Par<em>liar<\/em>ment&#8221; &#8211; a house in which people are lied to. This was the impression of a debate on July 9, 1940, in the British House of Commons. Already in the debate, the statements of a member of the government were strongly contradicted. As a further counter-image to the official account, here is information about many of the 478 refugees from Germany and Austria who were to be deported to Canada on the <em>Arandora Star<\/em>.<\/p>\n<cite><em>Peter Dehn January 2024 (updated 2025).<\/em><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"%E2%80%9C%E2%80%A6_that_none_of_them_came_to_this_land_as_a_refugee%E2%80%9D\"><\/span><strong>&#8220;&#8230; that none of them came to this land as a refugee&#8221;<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A real tissue of lies was built by the British Minister of Shipping Ronald Cross in the House of Commons on July 9, 1940. A week after the sinking of the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/arandora-starpart-1\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"12081\">Arandora Star<\/a><\/em>, he told parliamentarians and journalists<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;that all the Germans on board were Nazi sympathisers and that none came to this country as refugees. None had category B or C certificates or were recognised as friendly aliens.&#8221; <\/p>\n<cite>Minister of Shipping <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-12495'>Ronald Cross<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[1]  Minutes from <a href=\"https:\/\/api.parliament.uk\/historic-hansard\/commons\/1940\/jul\/09\/loss-of-arandora-star\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">House of Commons<\/a>, July 9, 1940, retrieved Aug 20, 2023.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> in the House of Commons on July 7, 1940.<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cross pulled himself out of the affair by citing his &#8220;most honorable friend&#8221;, Secretary of War Anthony Eden, as a source. The statement was based on the <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/british-deportationspart-2-2\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"12689\">tribunals<\/a> classification, which is critically appreciated elsewhere. The author was shocked to read this claim of the minister. Because by previous researches several names of Jews and Nazi opponents were already known to him, whom Great Britain wanted to get rid of by means of the <em>Arandora Star<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"About_the_procedure_and_the_sources\"><\/span><strong>About the procedure and the sources<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several sources were used for this page. First, the 253 names on the <em>Dunera<\/em>&#8216;s &#8220;Ex Arandora Star&#8221; <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-12499'>embarkation list<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[2]  National Archives of Australia (NAA), Embarkation List No. 1, NAA Item ID 657104, pages 4-6, retrieved Aug 30, 2023. The British authorities had misspelled a plethora of names on the first list. The disembarkation lists made on the <em>Dunera<\/em> by Australians were obviously more carefully made. It was now possible to search for the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-12508'>individuals<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[4]  Out of 251 men, one was disembarked at Cape Town. Another name on the British list could not be researched.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> in the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-12506'>Australian National Archives<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[5]  Cf. From this, 22 names of <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-12511'>Jewish internees<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[6]  Even \"dissidents\" who had turned away from Judaism were persecuted by the Nazis for racist motives.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> emerged initially. Further information, including on the classification by the tribunals, had been found on the ancestry platform ancestry.<br><br>With the extensive &#8220;supplement&#8221; to the official British final report in the matter of <em>Arandora Star<\/em> by <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-12514'>Louis Eleazar Gutmann-Polangen<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[7]  Louis Eleazar Gutmann-Polangen, \"<a href=\"https:\/\/cdm21047.contentdm.oclc.org\/digital\/api\/collection\/tav\/id\/4695\/download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Arandora Star Victims<\/a>. A Supplement to the White Paper\", 1941, retrieved Aug 20, 2023.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> an interesting source was found. The author, himself one of the survivors, named more than 130 internees of the <em>Arandora Star<\/em> transport from his own knowledge. For each person he included brief biographical note. This list includes other Jews and Nazi opponents among the <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-20465'>251 survivors<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[8]  The difference between the 253 names on the British embarkation list and the 251 men who disembarked in Australia arose because Heinz Scheither, who was listed by the British, was not taken on board and Wolfgang Kittel was allowed to leave the Dunera in Cape Town.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> of the <em>Arandora Star<\/em> who were subsequently deported to Australia on the <em>Dunera<\/em>.<br><br>Another list compiled by Gutmann-Polangen contains 70 names of <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-12298'>survivors<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[9]  Cf. <a href=\"http:\/\/pacitti.biz\/Arandora%20Star%202021%20Conference.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Notes<\/a> on Rachel Pistol's presentation at the conference \"Arandora Star Remembered\", London, Nov 30, 2021, accessed on Aug 30, 2023.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> known to him who were not allowed to be deported to Australia for health reasons by doctors at Meanskirk Hospital in Scotland. He also lists almost 80 internees who were deported to Canada on other transports.<strong><br><\/strong><br>Gutmann-Polangen&#8217;s statements are based on his recollections of conversations with his fellow internees. It may therefore be that some of his memories are inaccurate. He himself deliberately makes no claim to the completeness of his recollections.<br><br>The ancestry family tree platform also contained a set of British <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-12518'>index cards<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[10]  Cf. data collection \"Internees on SS Arandora Star. Germans\", retrieved via ancestry.de (membership required) on 28 November 2023.<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> on 143 German fatalities, which were compared with the previous research results. <br><br>A collection of \u201cred index cards\u201d contains brief notes on 315 survivors of the Arandora Star. These were researched and, where necessary, incorporated into the short biographies.<br><br>A further comparison was made with a collection of data compiled by Alfonso Pacitti, who in November 2025 \u2014 after extensive research, particularly on the 707 <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/arandora-star-part-3\/\">Italian <em>Arandora Star<\/em> internees<\/a> \u2014 presented lists of all 1,614 men on the <em>Arandora Star<\/em>. He also published lists of names of the 470 German and Austrian internees, the 255 guards, and 182 crew members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"No_coincidence_almost_every_third_person_a_Nazi_persecutee\"><\/span><strong>No coincidence:<\/strong> a<strong>lmost every third person a Nazi persecutee<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-7387b849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on Gutmann-Polangen&#8217;s information and his own research, around 153 Germans and Austrians on the <em>Arandora Star <\/em>were Jews or political refugees. That is almost 32 percent of the 470 compatriots taken onto the ill-fated ship. Of the 320 survivors, <span class='reference'><span class='has_reference ref-25641'>250 men<\/span><span class='ref_tooltip'>[11]  Of the 253 names on the list mentioned above, two did not make the journey and <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/?p=16740\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">one man<\/a> was taken off board in Cape Town. Therefore, 250 men arrived in Australia on the Dunera (deaths during the voyage are not included here).<span class=\"tooltip_arrow\"><\/span><\/span><\/span> were deported to Australia on the <em>Dunera<\/em>. Because the known British documents contain no information about the reasons for internment and religious affiliation, no further details can be given about many of the names. <br><br>Karl Olbrysch, a former member of the Reichstag for the Communist Party, was the most prominent of the political figures on board. <br><br>What is clear, however, is that in many cases the British authorities did not merely adopt the defamatory Nazi suffix \u201cIsrael\u201d for Jewish men in their records. Most of the Jews and Nazi opponents who were deported on the <em>Arandora Star<\/em> were labeled with the letter \u201cA\u201d\u2014meaning they were classified as Nazis. Who still believes in coincidences? This label initially legitimized their imprisonment (\u201cinternment\u201d) and, in June and July 1940, their deportation in five transports overseas. The above statement by the British government in the House of Commons insulted the victims of fascist persecution.<br><br>Even people who, under British law, should not have been interned or deported solely on the basis of <a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/en\/the-oldest-dunera-boys\/\">their age<\/a> were deported. These include numerous businessmen interned in Great Britain or its colonies and members of the German merchant navy, including the captain of the <em>Adolf Woermann<\/em>, Heinrich Burfeind. Another notable victim of Prien&#8217;s torpedo was Kurt von Wilmowsky from the Krupp industrialist family. It can be assumed that the proportion of Nazis in this group was particularly high, as loyalty to the regime and an \u201cAryan certification\u201d was required for foreign assignments.<br><br>The torpedo shots fired by G\u00fcnther Prien, hailed by the Nazis as a naval hero, at the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/dunera.de\/arandora-starpart-1\/?lang=en\">Arandora Star<\/a><\/em> on July 2, 1940, cost the lives of 800 men. Louis Eleazar Gutmann-Polangen named numerous victims known to him. In 1941, he referred to them as &#8220;missing persons&#8221; to preserve for their relatives a &#8220;vague hope&#8221; that neutral ships might have recovered individual survivors.<br><br><strong>To the name lists:<\/strong><br><br>By cross-referencing Gutmann-Polangen\u2019s list with a set of British index cards on the Ancestry genealogy platform, names were verified and ages were added.
